Drivers return to Cambridge Park and Rides after Tory U-turn on parking charge

by johnwilliams on 19 February, 2019

There were more than 261,000 journeys on Cambriddge Park and Ride services in January – up more than 15% compared to the same time last year.

The Newmarket P&R service has seen a 35% increase in journeys year-on-year – up to 43,702 this year from 32,184 in January 2018 – while there were 71,960 more journeys from the Babraham P&R – up 15.1% – for the same month.

When the Conservatives introduced a £1 parking charge use of the Park and Rides plummeted.

Under continuous pressure from Liberal Democrats for the charge to be abandoned the Conservatives did a U-turn before last year’s local elections and since then there has been a steady increase in use.

The Park and Ride sites were introduced to reduce traffic levels in Cambridge City Centre not to make money.
