At the full meeting of South Cambridgeshire District Council Liberal Democrat Councillors asked that it support the hundreds of residents from other European Union countries living in its district by asking the Government to give a guarantee that their existing rights will be protected from Brexit.

But Conservative Councillors  said they see those from other European countries living here, contributing to our economic success and paying taxes including council tax as bargaining chips to be used to get the same treatment for UK expats in Europe.

Many residents from other EU countries have lived here for many years giving us the benefit of their expertise and support yet Conservatives just see them as foreigners to be sent home if it suits them.

It was another disgraceful day for South Cambridgeshire District Council coming as it does after the Conservatives’ shameful rejection of support for refugees from Syria at a previous council meeting – at that meeting the then housing portfolio holder in rejecting Liberal Democrat demands for the council to get involved with the settlement of Syrian refugees said we should look after our own.
